What causes tooth sensitivity?

Patient with sensitive teeth in Columbus 39705Tooth sensitivity can be caused by multiple reasons that include: Tooth decay, fractured teeth, worn fillings, gum disease, worn tooth enamel, and exposed tooth root. All of these cause exposure of the inner layer of the tooth called dentin. Dentin has microscopic pores that allow cold, hot, acidic and sweet foods to reach the nerves in the teeth causing sensitivity to occur. Dentin is normally protected by hard enamel, but once this protective layer is removed the pores become exposed causing sensitivity.
