We are a premier provider for Delta Dental, and we will happily file claims with other insurance companies, even if we are not a provider. We have found that we can get better reimbursements for our patients by filing the claim ourselves. We want to do whatever we can to ensure you get the maximum out of the dental insurance benefits you paid for!

Because getting needed dental treatment shouldn’t be put off because of finances, we are pleased to offer other payment options as well. We accept cash, checks, and credit and debit cards.

At Shipp Family Dentistry, we focus on building relationships with each of our patients that establish mutual trust and understanding. You would be surprised how much easier it is to receive oral care when you feel safe and comfortable with your dental team.

Even so, you may still be generally anxious, and we understand that. We’re pleased to offer gentle sedation with nitrous oxide at our Columbus dentist office. Nitrous oxide is perfect for many patients because it is mild and has no lingering after-effects. You’ll be able to relax and get the care you need, then get on with your busy day!

If you have concerns about visiting the dentist or suffer from dental anxiety, give us a call to discuss nitrous oxide (laughing gas) before your visit. We can safely administer a dose of laughing gas during your treatment, which will cause you to feel light, tingly, and far away from the stress you feel.

The best part of receiving nitrous oxide is that the effects wear off in minutes, so you’ll be able to drive home by yourself and return to work or school if you need to. To learn more about our dental sedation, reach out today by calling (662) 329-3431.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Dental veneers in Columbus, MS, are made from porcelain or other composite materials, shaped into shells, and made to fit your teeth in particular. They show immediate cosmetic results by covering unattractive features with a seamless fit. In some cases, a dental veneer may relieve tooth sensitivity by covering an exposed surface that might be thin enough to let hot or cold substances into your tooth.

Veneers are a resilient restoration because the porcelain or composite material is strong and mimics the look of your natural tooth. And like a natural tooth, your veneer requires daily maintenance to keep it clean.

Care Instructions for Dental Veneers

With proper care, your veneers may last for years and even up to a decade. Your cosmetic dentist recommends the following maintenance steps:

  • Brush and floss twice daily
  • Avoid teeth grinding or wear a nightguard
  • Wear oral protection – for sports or other physical activities; we recommend a mouthguard
  • Don’t bite hard or sticky surfaces – we recommend you avoid chewing ice, hard candy, and other sticky foods

Columbus, MS cosmetic dentist Dr. Patrick Shipp can talk to you about many treatments, depending on the current state of your teeth as well as the goals for your smile. The best first step is to contact Shipp Family Dentistry to schedule a consultation.

We offer the following cosmetic dentistry services:

Teeth Whitening in Columbus, MS

Dental patient smiling after teeth whitening in Columbus MSIf your teeth and gums are healthy but your smile is not as white as you’d like, professional teeth whitening can make your teeth several shades whiter. This safe, affordable procedure is one of the most common cosmetic treatments we offer.

Porcelain Veneers

The chances are that Hollywood actor’s smile you admire so much is picture perfect because of porcelain veneers. But you don’t need to be a star to benefit from this treatment. These ultra-thin shell-like covers mask a multitude of problems with your teeth, including gaps and misalignment, as well as teeth that are stained or in need of reshaping.

Dental Crowns

If you have a damaged, broken, or oddly shaped tooth, a dental crown is a “cap” that is placed over the tooth. Dental crowns look natural and give you full function of the tooth.

Dental Implants

Nothing beats a dental implant for replacing a missing tooth. Not only does a dental implant restore your ability to chew properly, but it will also protect the remaining teeth in your mouth by filling in the gap left behind by a missing tooth.

Crowns and Bridges

Save Your Decayed or Broken Teeth

Man with dental crowns eating an apple near Columbus MSWhen a tooth has become severely damaged due to injury or decay, a dental crown is usually necessary to restore it.

Without a crown, the tooth is highly susceptible to breaking. If it breaks down too far, a root canal might be necessary, or in the worst case, a tooth might not be able to be saved. A dental crown protects your tooth from damage and decay!

The crown surrounds the entire tooth to prevent breakage in a way that a filling cannot. Often referred to as a “cap,” a crown is placed over a prepared tooth structure then cemented in place. It restores not only the form of the tooth but its function as well.

Uses for Dental Crowns in Columbus, MS

  • There is an area of substantial decay on a tooth that is beyond a simple filling.
  • A tooth has become cracked.
  • A root canal has been performed, and the remaining tooth structure needs a crown to protect it.
  • A tooth is severely worn down.

With proper care that includes regular brushing and flossing and regular dental exams and cleanings, a dental crown can last for many years.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are the healthiest, most stable tooth replacement available today. However, getting an implant isn’t quite as simple as walking into our Columbus, MS dentist office and walking out with a new tooth!

How Long Does The Dental Implant Process Take?

The process of getting a dental implant—from start to finish—usually takes anywhere from six to eight months.

First, the implant is placed surgically in your jawbone in a procedure that takes about an hour. The next step is the healing process, which requires your patience. During this time, your dental implant is fusing with bone and tissue that surround it and gaining the strength needed to support an artificial tooth. After healing is complete, the implant acts as an artificial tooth root, and when it is restored with a dental crown or denture, it mimics the form, function, and appearance of a natural tooth.

If you need a tooth extracted, it’s possible in some cases to place a dental implant the same day. However, most patients at Shipp Family Dentistry will need to wait three to four months for the extraction site to heal before we can place the dental implant.

If you have missing teeth, you never had more excellent options for replacing them. Dental bridges and full and partial dentures are popular, but the best tooth replacement is dental implants because they are the option that best supports your oral health.

How are Dental Implants different than Dentures?

Dental implants in Columbus, MS are different from bridges and dentures because they sit in your jaw, not on your jaw. A dental implant is designed to be an artificial replacement for the lost tooth root. It is a very small post that looks like a tiny screw and is positioned surgically in your jaw. The threads of the implant provide more surface area so that as the implant heals in your jaw, surrounding bone and tissue fuse to it securely.

Once the implant heals over several months, it acts just as your natural tooth root did. This is what makes dental implants unique because your dentist in Columbus, MS can then attach to the root a functioning restoration like a crown, bridge, or denture.

Your new tooth will look natural, and you’ll be able to chew all your favorite foods comfortably again. Also, a dental implant provides stimulation for the bone in your jaw so that it naturally regenerates itself and prevents the collapse of facial features that’s common with tooth loss.

Call Shipp Family Dentistry to Schedule!

If you have missing teeth, call our Columbus, MS dental office to learn more about dental implants and how they can change your life.

A dental implant is a cylindrical titanium post that is positioned surgically in your jawbone. Because titanium is readily accepted by the body, as the implant post heals, it fuses with the bone and tissue that surround it. This process is called osseointegration, and it's during this time that your implant gains its strength and stability.

Dental Bridges vs. Implants

Dental bridges are a tooth replacement option that fills a space that can replace one, two, or sometimes three to four teeth. The bridge places an artificial tooth in the open space and attaches to adjacent teeth with dental crowns. The drawback of using bridges is that they require us to alter healthy teeth to accommodate the dental crowns.

After the implant heals, it acts just as your natural tooth root did and helps minimize bone loss that commonly occurs after you lose a tooth. A dental bridge that sits on top of your gums completes your smile but does nothing to prevent the bone loss that can ultimately lead to additional tooth loss.

Contact Our Columbus, MS Dentist Office to Schedule!

There are still plenty of cases where a dental bridge would be an excellent choice, but dental implants offer so many benefits that they have become the tooth replacement of choice. If you’re thinking about tooth replacement and want to learn more about dental implants in Columbus, MS, please call Shipp Family Dentistry today at (662) 329-3431!

Implants are a surgery that requires special training and high quality equipment to perform these procedures.

A cracked tooth is similar to losing a filling. You may or may not experience pain right away, but call us so we can take care of you before the tooth hurts or breaks further.

Cracked Tooth Repair

It is important to get your cracked tooth evaluated as soon as you can, even if it's not causing you immediate pain. This is because a cracked tooth can result in many future problems if it is left untreated, such as:

  • A tooth infection - A cracked tooth allows bacteria into the inner layers and the nerve of your tooth
  • A broken tooth - A crack or fracture in your tooth will only progress with time and could result in your tooth breaking
  • Tooth loss - A severely cracked tooth may not be salvageable and could require a tooth extraction

Treatment for a cracked tooth may run the gamut of a dental filling, dental crown, root canal, or tooth extraction. Columbus dentist, Dr. Patrick Shipp, will evaluate your cracked tooth and recommend the best treatment for your needs.

Unfortunately, dental restorations do have a life expectancy and will need to be replaced at some point. However, when you are consistent about visiting your dentist in Columbus, MS every six months for routine exams and cleanings, Dr. Shipp can often detect problems with your fillings early on. Then you can treat your tooth before a lost filling becomes a problem, and you can avoid the discomfort of a missing restoration.

Dental patient holding his chin thinking near Columbus MSNo Pain Doesn't Always Mean No Tooth Decay

Tooth decay always starts out small, and you usually have no idea it is there until a dentist’s x-ray identifies the tiniest bit of decay. A filling is the first line of treatment to repair small cavities and stop them from becoming big ones. If you wait until your tooth starts to hurt, then you may require more extensive and costly treatment such as a root canal.

Gum disease is similar in that it often starts out with no signs or symptoms. But the truth is that it is present in over half the adult population. Many of these people have no idea they even have it. Most people also don’t know that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Treatment for gum disease in its more advanced stages usually requires deep cleanings (scaling and root planing).

Be Preventative When It Comes to Your Health

When it comes to dentistry, treating small problems before they become big ones is always more comfortable—and less expensive. Usually, by the time something hurts in your mouth, you no longer have a small problem. Regular trips to the dentist can help keep your oral health in check and keep your smile healthy for a lifetime.

Pediatric Dentistry

Mother reading a book with her two children near Columbus MSWe Follow the ADA's Recommendations

The American Dental Association recommends that a child see a dentist when his or her first tooth appears, or around the age of one. Not only will we take the opportunity to see a child that age to acclimate him or her to the dentist office, but we will also do a quick check to see if there is any sign of decay or developmental issues.

We also like to spend some time with parents to ensure that they understand the best way to approach home care for their children. It can be a challenge to brush the teeth of wriggling toddler, and we will have some tips to make the process a bit easier.

We will also spend some time talking about the importance of a healthy diet when it comes to your child’s oral health.

Spend Time Preparing Your Child for Their First Appointment

Regardless of whether you think your child will be fearful of the dentist, it’s always a good idea to give kids a chance to process the expectation of what it will be like to visit the dentist. Bring your children with you to your appointments to get them accustomed to the sounds and smells of the dentist’s office. Talk about what will happen when they visit. Knowing what to expect can alleviate potential fears.

If you are not sure which toothpaste to purchase at the store, we recommend looking for the ADA seal of acceptance on the toothpaste package. This seal tells you that toothpaste has proven to meet the safety and effectiveness standards to help fight plaque and strengthen teeth for preventing decay

Woman thinking and looking up with questions marks around her head Twice-Yearly Dental Cleanings

Most people require only two visits to the dentist each year for examinations and cleanings. These visits allow us to check for any signs of tooth decay and gum disease and conduct an oral cancer screening. We will also take x-rays once a year in most cases.

Twice-yearly teeth cleanings give us a chance to remove any plaque and tartar that have built up on your teeth and along the gum line. Even the most diligent home care cannot remove the hard tartar that builds up on your teeth. The only way to remove it is with unique dental instruments.

Gum Disease Treatment in Columbus, MS

We will also check your mouth for any signs of gum disease. Gum disease in its early stages, known as gingivitis, is reversible if it is caught early. Gum disease is often present with no symptoms, so the only way to see if you have it is by going to the dentist.

Those who already have gum disease in its advanced stages may need to come to the dentist every few months for deep cleaning. Deep cleanings enable us to monitor the gum disease. When left unchecked and untreated, gum disease usually leads to tooth loss. We will treat it aggressively to help make sure this does not happen.

Man holding face from tooth pain at dentist office in Columbus MSTooth sensitivity can be caused by multiple reasons that include: Tooth decay, fractured teeth, worn out dental fillings, gum disease, worn tooth enamel, and exposed tooth root. All of these cause exposure of the inner layer of the tooth called dentin. Dentin has microscopic pores that allow cold, hot, acidic and sweet foods to reach the nerves in the teeth causing sensitivity to occur. Dentin is normally protected by hard enamel, but once this protective layer is removed the pores become exposed causing sensitivity.

What Helps Tooth Sensitivity

Our dentist in Columbus MS can tell you which source is causing the sensitivity in your teeth, and determine the appropriate course of treatment. If you are dealing with tooth sensitivity, we suggest you contact Shipp Family Dentistry.  When you come in for a comprehensive exam and dental cleaning, our dentist will determine the best treatment for tooth sensitivity.

Plaque is a sticky film in our mouths that is fast growing. Dental cleaning tools in Columbus dentist officePlaque can lead to gingivitis and dental decay. Good home care can keep the level of plaque very low but over time plaque can hardened to form calculus (tartar) and we cannot remove it with regular brushing and flossing.
